An AI assistant is planned. Until it is genuinely useful we would rather point you at the page that actually answers your question.
Time-series metrics and alerting for services and infrastructure, with attention to what you collect and who gets woken up.
Start Your ProjectPrometheus is an open-source monitoring system built around metrics. It scrapes numeric measurements from your services at regular intervals, stores them as time series, and evaluates alert rules against them. Queries are written in PromQL.
It is pull-based and designed to run inside the environment it monitors, which makes it a natural fit for Kubernetes where service discovery finds targets automatically.
It is a metrics system, not a complete observability platform. Logs and traces need other tools, and a single Prometheus server is not a long-term data store by default.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Deciding what to measure, naming and labelling it consistently, and instrumenting the application so dashboards and alerts have something meaningful to read.
Alerts on symptoms users feel, with thresholds, durations and Alertmanager routing set so on-call is paged for real problems and not for noise.
Planning for cardinality, federation or remote write, and a long-term storage option when the retention needs go beyond one server.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
High-cardinality labels, such as user IDs or request IDs, can exhaust memory. Cardinality is the most common way a Prometheus server falls over.
Local storage is not replicated or durable in the way a database is. Plan for long-term retention and for losing a node.
Alert fatigue is a design failure, not a tooling one. Every alert should be actionable, and ones that fire without action should be removed or retuned.
Scraping works poorly for short-lived jobs. Batch work needs a push gateway or a different pattern, used sparingly.
