An AI assistant is planned. Until it is genuinely useful we would rather point you at the page that actually answers your question.
A way to run open-weight language models on your own hardware, for data that must not leave your environment.
Start Your ProjectOllama is a tool for downloading and running open-weight language models — such as Llama, Mistral and Qwen families — on a local machine or a server you control, and exposing them through a simple local API. It removes most of the setup friction of serving a model, which makes it good for prototyping, development and small-scale private deployments.
It is a serving convenience, not a quality guarantee. The result is only as capable as the model you choose and the hardware you run it on, and open-weight models that fit on modest hardware are generally less capable than the largest hosted models. The trade is control and privacy against raw capability.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Question answering over internal documents with the model and the index both running inside the client's environment, so no content is sent to a third-party API.
Trying several open-weight models against a client's real examples cheaply, to learn whether a local model is good enough before committing to hardware or a hosted contract.
Assistants for environments with restricted or no connectivity, with a model sized to the hardware that is actually available on site.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Local does not mean free. GPU hardware or rented GPU time, power, and the engineering time to operate and update a model server are real costs that often exceed API spend until volume is high.
Memory is the main constraint. Model size, quantisation level and context length decide what fits on a given GPU, and heavier quantisation trades some accuracy for a smaller footprint.
Licences differ between open-weight models, and some restrict commercial use or set conditions on redistribution. Check the specific model's licence before building a product on it.
Safety and quality controls are yours to build. A hosted provider's moderation and guardrails do not come with a local model, so filtering, evaluation and monitoring have to be added.
