Supabase is an open-source backend platform built around PostgreSQL. It adds user authentication, file storage, realtime subscriptions to database changes, auto-generated APIs and serverless edge functions, so a small team gets a working backend quickly.
Because the core is standard PostgreSQL, your data and schema are not trapped in a proprietary model. Security is enforced with row-level security policies, which means the database itself decides who can read or write each row.

Supabase is a capability we take on per engagement. PostgreSQL is our primary database, and we are explicit about which parts of the platform we would rely on and which we would keep in our own service.

Row-level security is powerful and easy to get wrong. A missing or too-permissive policy exposes data, so policies need review and tests like any other security-critical code.

Business logic spread across policies, database functions and edge functions can become hard to follow. Decide early what lives where.

Using auth, storage and realtime together deepens coupling to the platform. That is fine for many products, but know what you would replace if you ever left.
FAQ
Supabase or a custom backend?
Supabase for speed when the product is still finding its shape and the access rules fit row-level security. A custom backend when business logic is complex, integrations are many, or you need control the platform does not give. Many products start on Supabase and move the complicated parts into their own service over time.
Is Supabase just PostgreSQL?
The database is standard PostgreSQL, which is why the exit path is credible. The auth, storage, realtime and function layers are Supabase's own and would need replacing if you moved off the platform.
Have you shipped on Supabase?
We take it on per engagement and do not publish client work or figures for it. We are strongest on PostgreSQL itself, and we will tell you plainly whether Supabase or a conventional backend suits your project better.
