Node.js runs JavaScript on the server using a single-threaded event loop with non-blocking I/O. One process can hold thousands of in-flight operations — database queries, API calls, file reads — without a thread for each.
This suits workloads dominated by waiting, which describes most web backends. It suits sustained computation poorly, because a long synchronous operation blocks the loop and stalls every other request in that process.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
REST and GraphQL services with validation, authentication and structured error handling.
WebSocket services with connection state and horizontal scaling across instances.
Queue workers with retries, dead-letter handling and idempotency for jobs that must not double-run.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
