An AI assistant is planned. Until it is genuinely useful we would rather point you at the page that actually answers your question.
Workflow automation connecting your apps and AI steps, where a visual builder is enough and custom code is not.
Start Your Projectn8n is a workflow automation platform with a visual editor. You connect triggers (a webhook, a schedule, a new row, an incoming email) to steps that call APIs, transform data, branch on conditions and, increasingly, call language models. It can be self-hosted or used as a hosted cloud service.
It sits between no-code tools and custom software. For glue work between SaaS tools and for AI-assisted routing and drafting it is faster to build than a service, and non-developers can read the flow. For core business logic with heavy load, strict transactions or complex state, ordinary code is the better home.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Flows that receive form submissions or emails, enrich and classify them, and route to the right person or system, with a human approval step wherever an automated mistake would be costly.
Document intake, data extraction and draft generation with an LLM step, validated before anything is written to a system of record.
Keeping records consistent between systems that lack a native integration, with retries, alerting on failure and an audit trail of what ran.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Licensing needs reading. n8n is source-available under a fair-code licence rather than a standard open-source one, so self-hosting for internal use differs from embedding it in a product you sell. Confirm the terms for your use before you build on it.
Self-hosting makes you responsible for upgrades, backups, queue-mode scaling and securing the instance, since it holds credentials to your other systems. The cloud service shifts that burden but changes cost and data location.
Credentials are the sensitive part. Use scoped service accounts, keep secrets in the platform's credential store and restrict who can edit workflows, because a workflow can reach everything its credentials can.
Error handling is not automatic. Failed executions need alerting, retries with limits and a way to replay safely, or a quiet failure can lose records for days.
