A global edge network for DNS, caching, protection and lightweight compute in front of or instead of an origin server.
Start Your ProjectCloudflare runs a large global network that sits between users and your application. Most teams meet it first as DNS, a CDN and DDoS and bot protection, then discover the platform behind it: Workers for edge compute, R2 for object storage, KV and D1 for edge data, and Pages for static and full-stack sites.
Putting an application behind Cloudflare changes where work happens. Cached content is served near the user, abusive traffic is filtered before it reaches your origin, and small pieces of logic can run at the edge instead of on a central server.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Putting production sites behind Cloudflare with sensible cache rules, TLS settings and firewall policies, so traffic spikes and abusive requests are absorbed before the origin.
Small, fast request handlers for redirects, authentication checks and routing that are better placed near the user than on a central server.
R2 and Pages for asset delivery and static sites where simple, cheap global distribution is the goal.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Cache configuration is where most mistakes happen. Caching a personalised or authenticated response can leak one user's content to another, so cache rules need explicit review.
Workers run in a constrained runtime with CPU time and memory limits, and not every Node.js package works. Check dependencies against the runtime before committing to the approach.
Edge data products have different consistency and size characteristics from a traditional database. Understand them before treating them as a backend.
Changing DNS and proxy settings affects the whole site. Rollout should be staged and reversible, with a plan for the origin to remain reachable if the proxy misbehaves.
Real client IPs, TLS modes and header forwarding need configuring correctly at the origin, or logging, rate limiting and security checks silently see Cloudflare instead of the visitor.
