An AI assistant is planned. Until it is genuinely useful we would rather point you at the page that actually answers your question.
A fully managed vector database for retrieval workloads, chosen when you want search over embeddings without running the infrastructure yourself.
Start Your ProjectPinecone is a managed vector database. You store embeddings produced by a model, attach metadata, and query for the nearest neighbours of a new embedding. It is the retrieval layer behind semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
It is closed-source and available only as a hosted service. That is the trade: no cluster to operate, tune or patch, in exchange for a usage-based bill and a dependency on the vendor.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
The retrieval layer behind assistants that answer from a client's own documents, with metadata filters scoping what each user may retrieve.
Search by meaning rather than keywords for catalogues, knowledge bases and support content, often alongside a keyword index.
Namespaces used to keep each tenant's embeddings separate, so one customer's content never appears in another's results.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Retrieval quality depends far more on chunking, the embedding model and metadata design than on which vector database stores the result. Swapping databases rarely fixes poor answers.
Because Pinecone is hosted only, the cost model is usage-based and should be estimated against your real query and storage volume before committing, not after.
Keep the source documents and the pipeline that produced the embeddings. If you change embedding model you must re-embed everything, and that is much easier when ingestion is reproducible.
Filtering by metadata is central to most real deployments. Design the metadata schema up front, since adding filterable fields later usually means re-indexing.
