An open-source vector database with rich payload filtering, a fit when you need to self-host retrieval or want fine control over filtered search.
Start Your ProjectQdrant is an open-source vector database written in Rust. It stores vectors with a JSON-like payload and lets you filter on that payload during the nearest-neighbour search itself, not only before or after it.
It can be run in your own infrastructure with Docker or Kubernetes, or used as a hosted service. Support for sparse vectors alongside dense ones makes hybrid retrieval, combining keyword-style and semantic signals, practical.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Running retrieval inside a client's own cloud account or cluster when data cannot be sent to a third-party hosted service.
Search where users narrow by category, owner, date or permission and the filter must apply during the vector search, not afterwards.
Combining dense and sparse vectors so exact terms such as part numbers and names are not lost behind purely semantic matching.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Qdrant is a capability we take on per engagement, not part of our standing production stack. We say so up front and scope a proof of concept before committing to it.
Self-hosting means owning backups, upgrades, monitoring and capacity planning for a stateful service. That operational cost is real and belongs in the comparison with a managed option.
Index and quantization settings trade memory, speed and recall against each other. Tune them against your own queries, and measure recall instead of trusting defaults.
Payload fields you filter on should be indexed deliberately. An unindexed filter on a large collection is a common cause of slow queries.
