Pipeline-as-code, agent management and plugin hygiene for teams running Jenkins, or a careful route off it.
Start Your ProjectJenkins is a self-hosted automation server and one of the longest-running CI tools. Pipelines are written in a Jenkinsfile, and a large plugin ecosystem connects it to nearly any build tool, source host or deployment target.
That flexibility is the reason it persists in organisations with unusual build requirements or private networks. It is also the reason it demands upkeep: you operate the controller, the agents and the plugins yourself.
We take on Jenkins work per engagement, mostly stabilising or modernising a setup a client already has. It is not part of the stack we run for our own projects.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Moving click-configured jobs into versioned pipeline code, and pulling repeated logic into a shared library so one fix reaches every pipeline.
Ephemeral container or cloud agents instead of long-lived snowflake machines, and a controller that does not run builds itself.
When the maintenance burden outweighs the flexibility: mapping existing jobs, porting in stages and running both systems in parallel until the old one can be retired.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Plugins are the main source of risk. Each one has its own maintenance state and some conflict on upgrade, so a plugin audit is usually the first task.
Security advisories for Jenkins and its plugins are frequent. A controller that is not patched on a schedule, and is reachable from the internet, is a genuine exposure.
Jobs configured through the web UI are not reproducible. If the controller disk is lost, so is the pipeline definition, unless it is in version control.
Groovy pipelines are easy to write and hard to test. Keep the logic in scripts and tools you can run locally, and keep the Jenkinsfile thin.
