Agentless configuration management that brings servers to a known state from versioned playbooks, and keeps them there.
Start Your ProjectAnsible is a configuration management and automation tool. You describe the desired state of machines in YAML playbooks and roles, and Ansible connects over SSH, with no agent installed, to bring each host to that state.
It sits in a different place from Terraform. Terraform creates infrastructure; Ansible configures what runs on it, such as packages, services, users and files. Many setups use both, with Terraform provisioning a server and Ansible configuring it.
We take on Ansible work per engagement, typically for virtual machines and bare metal. It is not part of the stack we run for our own projects.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Users, packages, SSH settings, firewall rules and logging applied the same way to every host, with the playbook as the record of what is deployed.
Ordered rollouts with health checks between steps for applications that are not containerised.
Terraform provisions the machines; Ansible configures them, with inventory generated from Terraform outputs so the two never drift apart.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Idempotency is a property of how you write the tasks, not of the tool. A raw shell or command task runs every time and can change things on every run unless it is guarded.
Check mode and diff mode are only as reliable as the modules behind them. Test playbooks on a disposable host before trusting a dry run.
Roles grow into tangled variable precedence. Keep variable layers few and document where each value is meant to come from.
Secrets belong in a vault or an external store, never in plain inventory files committed to the repository.
