Enterprise Java services on the JVM, built to integrate with the systems a larger organisation already runs.
Start Your ProjectSpring Boot is the dominant framework for building Java web services and APIs. It wraps the broader Spring ecosystem with sensible defaults, embedded servers and auto-configuration, so a service can start with very little setup while still reaching deep into security, data access and messaging.
Its value is mostly institutional: a very large talent pool, long-term support, strong typing and mature tooling for transactional, regulated and integration-heavy systems. It asks more of a team in ceremony and startup weight than lighter frameworks do.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Spring Boot APIs that sit alongside a client's existing Java systems, exposing and consuming data without replacing what already works.
Services where database transactions, validation and auditability are the point, with Spring Data and explicit transaction boundaries.
Reviewing an existing Spring codebase, adding tests around it and improving it incrementally, including staged moves toward smaller services where that is justified.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Auto-configuration is powerful and opaque. When behaviour surprises you, the cause is often a default you did not know was active, so we keep configuration explicit for anything that matters.
Lazy loading in JPA and Hibernate produces N+1 queries and detached-entity errors. Fetch strategy has to be designed per use case, not left to defaults.
JVM memory and startup time affect container sizing and cold starts. We set memory limits and measure under load rather than guessing resource requests.
Splitting into microservices too early is a common Spring-era mistake. A well-structured modular monolith is often the better starting point, and we say so when it applies.
