Deep learning with PyTorch for custom model training and fine-tuning, when an off-the-shelf API will not do.
Start Your ProjectPyTorch is an open-source deep learning framework, widely used in research and increasingly in production. It builds models with ordinary Python control flow, which makes experiments and debugging straightforward, and most open model releases — including much of what is published on Hugging Face — ship PyTorch weights first.
It matters when you need to train or modify a model rather than call one. That means a custom vision model for your images, a fine-tuned language model, a time-series or recommendation model on your data. If a hosted API already solves the problem acceptably, PyTorch is more machinery than you need.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Classification, detection and segmentation models trained on a client's images, validated on held-out data from the real capture environment rather than a clean sample.
Adapting a pre-trained model to a narrow domain using parameter-efficient methods, then comparing it against a prompted general model before recommending it.
Exporting trained models and serving them behind an API with versioned artefacts, input validation and monitoring for drift.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Data decides the outcome. Label quality, coverage of edge cases and a test set that reflects production conditions matter more than architecture choices, and collecting them is usually the largest part of the work.
Training needs GPUs and discipline: experiment tracking, reproducible seeds and versioned datasets, so a result can be repeated and a regression traced.
A model that works in a notebook is not a product. Serving latency, batching, hardware cost, monitoring for drift and a retraining path all have to be designed.
Check the licence of any pre-trained weights and datasets, since some forbid commercial use.
