An AI assistant is planned. Until it is genuinely useful we would rather point you at the page that actually answers your question.
A graph database for problems defined by connections, where following relationships across many hops is the main query and a relational database struggles.
Start Your ProjectNeo4j is a graph database. Data is stored as nodes and the relationships between them, each with properties, and queried with Cypher, a language built around describing patterns of connections.
The advantage appears when a question depends on traversing many relationships, such as friends of friends, shared devices across accounts, or the dependencies of a component. In a relational database those become deep, expensive chains of joins.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Modelling accounts, devices and events as a graph so connected-entity questions are direct queries rather than layered joins.
Structuring entities and their links to give an LLM-backed assistant relationship-aware context alongside vector search.
Representing hierarchies and inherited access where depth varies and the answer comes from walking the structure.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Neo4j is a capability we take on per engagement, not part of our standing production stack. We confirm with a small model of your real questions before recommending a graph.
The hard part is the data model, not the database. A graph model built around the queries you will ask works well; one copied from a relational schema often performs no better and costs more.
It is a separate system to operate and keep in sync with your primary database. That overhead is only worth it if relationship traversal is central to the product.
Licensing differs between the community and enterprise editions and the managed service. Check which features, such as clustering, you actually need before choosing.
