A query layer giving API clients precise control over fetched data, where that flexibility earns the added complexity it brings.
Start Your ProjectGraphQL is a query language and runtime for APIs, letting a client specify exactly which fields it needs in a single request rather than hitting multiple fixed REST endpoints and over- or under-fetching data. It replaces a fixed response shape with one a client defines per request.
It genuinely earns its complexity on products with varied, evolving client needs — multiple frontends (web, mobile, partner integrations) each wanting a different slice of the same underlying data. For a single, simple frontend talking to its own backend, a well-designed REST API is usually simpler to build, cache and reason about.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
APIs serving genuinely different client needs (web, mobile, partner integrations) from one underlying data layer.
Products where frontend data requirements change often enough that a fixed REST response shape becomes a recurring bottleneck.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
GraphQL resolvers are a common source of N+1 query performance problems if not deliberately addressed (batching/data-loader patterns) — this needs to be part of the design from the start, not a later optimisation pass.
HTTP-level caching, which REST gets largely for free, requires more deliberate design in GraphQL (persisted queries, field-level caching strategies).
The added flexibility is a real cost, not just a benefit — a project with one simple client and stable data needs is usually better served by REST.
