Lean Node.js APIs where a thin framework and explicit middleware beat a heavier, more opinionated structure.
Start Your ProjectExpress is a minimal web framework for Node.js. It gives you routing, a middleware pipeline and request/response helpers, and almost nothing else — no built-in validation, no dependency injection, no prescribed folder layout.
That minimalism is the whole trade. A small service stays small and fast to understand. A large one has no structure unless the team supplies it, which is why Express codebases vary so widely in quality from one team to the next.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Route handlers behind a consistent middleware chain: authentication, schema validation at the boundary, and one central error handler.
A thin Express service that aggregates several downstream APIs into the exact shape a web or mobile client needs.
Endpoints that accept third-party callbacks, verify signatures, acknowledge quickly and hand the work to a queue.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Express 4 does not catch rejected promises in async handlers, so one forgotten try/catch can leave a request hanging. Express 5 fixes this; either way we route async errors through a single wrapper rather than trusting each handler.
Middleware order is behaviour. Putting body parsing, authentication and rate limiting in the wrong sequence produces bugs that look like logic errors rather than configuration errors.
Nothing validates input for you. Without a schema layer at every boundary, TypeScript types give a false sense of safety because they are erased at runtime.
Security defaults are minimal. Headers, CORS policy, request size limits and rate limiting are all things we add deliberately, not things the framework provides.
