Straightforward cloud hosting with predictable pricing for workloads that do not need the breadth of a hyperscaler.
Start Your ProjectDigitalOcean is a cloud provider aimed at developers and small to mid-sized teams. Its core products are Droplets (virtual machines), managed databases, object storage, a managed Kubernetes service and App Platform for deploying code without managing servers.
It trades the enormous service catalogue of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud for a smaller, simpler set of building blocks and more predictable pricing. For many applications that is exactly the right trade; for those needing specialised managed services it is a limit.
Suitability
And when it is not. Choosing the wrong tool costs more than any implementation detail.
In practice
Deploying web applications and APIs onto Droplets or App Platform with a managed database, sized to the workload rather than a reference template.
Docker-based deployments, and managed Kubernetes where a team genuinely needs orchestration rather than a single well-run service.
Moving or setting up a modest workload where predictable bills and operational simplicity beat the flexibility of a larger platform.
Considerations
Practical notes from running this in production.
Our primary production experience is on AWS. DigitalOcean engagements are taken on where a client's existing hosting or budget makes it the right fit, and are scoped and verified in discovery like any other work.
A self-managed Droplet means you own patching, firewalling, backups and monitoring. Without automation and a tested restore process, the low price hides real operational work.
The managed service catalogue is smaller. If a requirement needs a service DigitalOcean does not offer, you either run it yourself or add another provider, which changes the cost picture.
Regions and compliance options are more limited than the major providers. Check data-residency and audit requirements before committing.
Outbound traffic and managed database sizing still need monitoring. Predictable pricing does not remove the need to watch usage.
